12-28-12 Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Position RFT Review
The Potenza RE960AS Pole Position RFT replaced OEM Potenza previous generation summer tires on my 2007 BMW 328i with sport package. I was considering Michelin Pilot Sport go-flat tires, but I do like the run flat concept. These tires give a softer, smoother, quieter ride than the originals. They work well on wet pavement &  seem to corner about as well as the OEM tires.  Read more

Switched out OEM Dunlops for these on my 2010 G37xS. So far they have 31K miles, mostly highway but a fair amount of city, too; mostly dry &  wet conditions, rare but heavy snow falls, ice, slush, etc. On my previous G35S, drove with Bridgestone RE050s for 12K, Goodyear Eagle F1s for 15K, Kumho Ecsta LX Platinums for 35K, after having driven Michelin Pilot Exaltos on a 1990 Maxima for years.  Read more

12-21-12 Bridgestone Potenza RE760 Sport Review
S2000 Potenza RE760 Sport Bliss! First drive on the 760's was like driving a different car. I replaced the rear tires on my S2000 equipped with factory Potenza S-02s that were worn down to slicks. S-02s are great tires, but when they get to this point they become bouncy &  noisy.  Read more
12-14-12 Bridgestone Potenza RE040 RFT Review
This would be a great tire if this series, RE040, were not so prone to sidewall bubbles. I use these tires from April to November only &  hsve roughly 20,000 miles on summer tires, but have had to replace three for sidewall bubbles-at $ 200 each. Have had no trouble with Bridgestones of other series on my 911.  Read more
12-13-12 Bridgestone Potenza RE040 Review
I waited until I had about 1K miles on the new tires. My perception of the rear end breaking loose under modest acceleration (138 HP is modest in any gear but first anyway) in a sweeping dogleg was confirmed many times until I stopped challenging the MR2 in nearly any modest turn. I was disappointed.  Read more
12-12-12 Bridgestone Potenza RE030 Review
These are the original tires, now with 29k miles. Hard to rate them with certainty because I have had no other tires on the car to compare, but grip in both wet &  dry has been very good &  predictable. They are down to about 5/32 in tread &  hydroplaning happens noticibly sooner than when they had 20k miles. Noise seems typical, &  varies greatly due to road surfaces.  Read more
12-11-12 Bridgestone Potenza RE011 Review
I am on my second season of these tires as I rotate to winters in our extreme Canadian Winter. I noticed allot of noise from the rear of my car, which I though may be a bearing. Upon inspection it was due to lumps on the inside edges of my tires. I rotated in the spring but did again, the noise now in the front. My car may have negative camber but the tires are a poor design. Bridgestone makes a tire to specifically combat this problem the RE050A Pole position, which in there words has.  Read more

My scores are in comparison the other tires in its category. The tires were recommended my local Tire Rack when my first choice was not is stock. The price was right on them, so, I gave them a shot. At first I thought that I made a huge mistake.  Read more
12-07-12 Bridgestone Expedia S-01 Review
The Bridgestone Expedia S01 is a first rate C4 Corvette tire for the serious driving enthusiast. A bit firm on tar strips &  broken surfaces but otherwise smooth &  quiet - imparts a sense of effortless &  control. Everything is linear, predictable - excellent limit handling with "no surprizes." There was a niggling irregular belt issue which caused steering wheel jiggle similar to dynamic imbalance.  Read more
12-06-12 Bridgestone Potenza S001 Review
In Italy only S001 is available &  not S04PP. My car has &  ECU mapping &  a TarOx B33 10 pots calipers &  335mm discs system on front &  315mm discs on rear. With Carbon Lorraine RC8 pads on front &  RC6 on rear. With such a braking setup &  175Bhp under the bonnet with loads of torque, it is easy to detect tires' performances on such a light car. Former tires were the Pirelli PZero Rosso, always 225/40 ZR 18 92Y XL. Pressure was 2.5bar front &  2.4 rear for both brands. The PZero ended their bed in period after 2000km &  the Bridgestone are still to bed in at the rear. Makes sense given the higher treadwear index of Bridge tires.  Read more
12-04-12 Bridgestone Potenza S-04 Pole Position Review
Bought these to replace Potenza RE050 tires that were run out. The treadwear rating for the new tires are predicted to double the wear rating of the older ones &  because of the grip, cornering &  even wear of the old ones I wanted to stick to the Potenzas.  Read more
12-04-12 Bridgestone Potenza S-02 A Review
My OE Dunlops were spent &  the dealer recommended these Bridgestones. I've been nothing, but disappointed. People rag on the OE Dunlops, but I preferred them pretty much in every way to the Bridgestones.  Read more
11-30-12 Bridgestone Potenza S-02 Review
Although I am satisfied with the S-02 tires &  they met my expectations, I recently replaced them with RE050A Pole Position tires because I believe the new tire technology is better than the S-02 or S-02A. I live in Seattle so rain driving probably allowed me to get 14K miles out of tires instead of the 8K I would expect. With a Boxster, the rear tires have a lot of work to do &  since I have a 3.4L 996 engine installed, the rear tires get tortured.  Read more

OH MY --- - these tires are a disaster !!. I just took delivery of a Mini Cooper S with 17 inch wheels (+ sport pack) as a surprise for my wife's 50th birthday and they came with these Bridgstone RFT tires. We've done about 250km on them so far and neither my wife nor I are prepared to drive the car any further.  Read more
11-28-12 Bridgestone Potenza RE050A Pole Position RFT Review
I replaced the OEM Goodyear after 18,000 miles &  found, to my delight, that the Bridgestones transformed the feel &  enjoyment of driving. In particular, I no longer have to grip the steering wheel with two hands to keep the car on course; Goodyear OEM were scary with their tendency to wander across the lane even on relatively smooth surfaces.  Read more
11-27-12 Bridgestone Potenza RE050A Pole Position Review
I bought this tire versus some other high performance tires because of its noise rating on Tire Rack. The original tires were very noisy. These are much quieter. The cornering &  braking improvement over the tires supplied by the manufacturer is impressive. With the old tires I often got the anti-skid to activate in the dry. With these I've never gotten the anti-skid to activate in the dry.  Read more
11-26-12 Bridgestone Potenza RE050A II RFT Review
Awful. Thats the one word I'd use to describe these tires. They came stock on my BMW, &  I like the run flat idea - despite what many others think. These particular run flats, however, display all the negative characteristics you'll hear people mention when they bash RFT technology. My biggest complaint with these is they are LOUD. The road noise is deafening..  Read more
04-12-12 Bridgestone Potenza RE050A I RFT Review
This were OEM tires on my 335i Sport sedan. Solid performers, but read on. If you think you'll get away with a few uses in winter conditions, think again. The tires are absolutely useless in winter conditions -- the car is a sled. Take them off. Other complaints: like other reviewers, I developed bubbles/bulges on a front tire, & a very slow leak on a rear.  Read more

these tires came as OEM on our 350Z Roadster, bought slightly used. overall a very responsive tire in cornering & steering response. It compliments the 350Z's suspension well, which makes it easy to see why Nissan chose them for OEM. I haven't carved any canyons so cornering limits not explored, but I did make a few 1/4 mile passes on them.  Read more

my tire pressure moniture alerted of low pressure on left rear tire. this is a run flat tire that claims that you can travel 50 miles at 50 mph. at appx. 12 miles the tire was on the rim & i couldn't go any further. to make the long story short not one tire dealer in a town of about 40,000 had a replacement tire of any brand to fit my vehicle. i had to get a tire from another town & have it installed at a different dealer[goodyear] for they didn't have the equipment to mount the new tire. also i was told by the bmw dealer that they don't repair this kind of tire but replace if it gets a flat. nice !!! almost $500 for a flat that couldn't even go 12 miles. NEVER AGAIN WILL I BUY RUNFLAT TIRES.  Read more
04-09-12 Bridgestone Potenza RE050 Review
We put these tires on our Camry after the origianl set went 65K. Happy with wear, But as they get older they are way too noisey. I have had the bearings checked twice as I could not believe a tire could get this noisey. Loud radio will not help. It sounds as though something is about to come off while driving.  Read more
04-06-12 Bridgestone Potenza RE070R RFT Review
After two track days, about two months apart, & 6 months of occasional driving, the tread is at 40-50%. Performs well at 2 PSI below recommended inflation for track (nitrogen). If no track days, this tire's mileage will be pretty good for a max performance summer tire. Rides very hard even in comfort mode (run flat). I would not recommend a third day on track given the punishment that the GTR's weight & size dole out.  Read more
04-04-12 Bridgestone Potenza RE070 Tire Review
I use this tyre for track days. The best tyre in the 140 treadwear range. I have won street tyre championship with this tyre. Lowered the nsw wrx club in australia record by 1.5sec.   Got these tires two years ago for my Echo hatchback, which has been modified for track days with upgraded suspension & brakes. I've got about a half-dozen track days on these tires as well as about 12000 miles of street use & they look like they'll probably last another season. I'm surprised by how long they are lasting & was expecting them to wear much quicker than they are considering the grip they provide.  Read more
04-02-12 BFGoodrich Commercial T/A Traction Tire Review
First off - let me state that I have always driven 4WD vehicles & have had many, many different kinds of tires. I purchased these for my K2500 HD to replace OEM Bridgestone V steels. The traction is insane as these went better in 2WD than my truck used to in 4WD.  Read more
07-05-11 BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2 Tire Review
I'm running 33x10.5's and have been extremely impressed with this tire. I was running BFG AT's previously, and my primary concern with switching to this tire was how it would handle light snow and ice during the winter here in Vermont. While not as good as my AT's in hard packed snow or on ice, they were never out of control or at a complete loss of traction.  Read more
06-30-11 BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM Tire Review
Love these tires! I bought my first BFGoodrich tires which happened to be Mud-Terrain T/A KM's in early 2007 its currently 2011 and I'm not happy about letting them go but after 4 years the tread is finally worn and there's some dry rot on 1 of the 4 tires. I have made multiple trips from NC to ME and back as well as NC to AL and back, done plenty of trail riding and commute to and from work daily, lets just say I have completely abused them.  Read more

06-20-11 BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO Tire Review
Most of my driving is city/highway, with some recreational off-road. I did not notice these tires being louder or harsher than the stock M&S SUV tires, but that could be the Lexus sound proofing and the fact that it already had a harsh ride. Snow/ice traction is much better than the stock tires and off-road traction is superior compared to stock.  Read more
06-16-11 BFGoodrich Rugged Trail T/A Tire Review
Not sure if it matters but my truck is a Dodge RAM 2500 Quad Cab 4x4 Cummins Diesel, with an aftermarket MBRP High Flow exhaust. BFG Rugged Trail TA 265-70R17 Load Range E.Originally tires were BFG Rugged Trail TA and I logged 118k on that set. Shopping around for then again, and was told they were junk. I said I will take that junk again, logged another 100k, and getting ready to put more "junk" on my truck again.  Read more
06-13-11 BFGoodrich Rugged Terrain T/A Tire Review
I took a chance on these brand new tires by BFG and so far am very pleased with the look and feel of this tire. The noise level is only noticable if the radio is off or turned down low. Most of my numbers are 8s because of the limited number of miles and conditions to compare against, but wanted to get feedback out to those of you doing research.  Read more
06-09-11 BFGoodrich Radial Long Trail T/A Review
I drove on these tires for 4.5 yrs so I feel they were solid and 65,ooo+ miles I cant say I did not get my $$$ worht out of them. They ride a little rough after and loud after 33K miles. Rotated them every 7K miles, tread wear was even, They rode as if they were octogan shaped and they did not preform well on slushy roads, they keep a solid grip on rain soaked ones.  Read more
06-06-11 BFGoodrich Commercial T/A All-Season Review
We travel many miles pulling a trailer through snow, rain and hot sun. These tires never failed us. With a lot of weight we didn't see much hydroplaning or slipping, but of course with no weight and 2 wheel drive, they didnt' grab in the snow or ice. We added chains to overcome a few bad snow storms and I thought the tires would break down after using the chains, but they have held up well.  Read more
05-31-11 BFGoodrich Long Trail T/A Tour Rveiew
These tires have two thirds of the tread worn off. I have had the wheels balanced twice and have had a wheel alignment and the wheels were not out of alignment. Considering the price of these tires i would expect much more mileage. Otherwise I think the tires perform well. Previously I had another SUV of similar weight and went though 3 sets of Michelin tires with about 70,000 miles on each - my next set will be Michelins!  Read more
05-26-11 BFGoodrich g-Force T/A Drag Radial 2 Tire Rveiew
I put these tires on a extra set of factory WS6 wheels to use only for the strip and on the street every now and then. I run in the 11's in the 1/4 mile at 120 mph. set the psi around 20-22. feels a little loose at high speed, more than i'm used to with this car any way if i go any lower psi. these tires hook very well with a prepped track, no spin even running the NO2. not bad on the street either. i will buy again after i kill these.  Read more
05-23-11 BFGoodrich g-Force T/A Drag Radial Tire Review
These tires did exactly what I expected from Drag Radials. My Mustang puts out a little over 450HP and these tires launched me. little tire spin when on the street. none when at the track and tires are heated up. Horrible in the rain.  Read more
05-19-11 BFGoodrich g-Force R1 Review
This is my third set of the R1's and i can't tell you how much i enjoy them. My issue is i require a 235 and these are the only real slicks that come in this size, Hoosiers do not offer the 235. I get plenty of heat cycles almost 20 track days before I see belts. They level off and hold on for a good period of time.  Read more
05-16-11 BFGoodrich Advantage T/A Tire Review
I live down winding country roads...tires are all around decent for the price but need to be replaced after only 30k miles. Proper inflation at all times, tire rotations done. I bought these when they first came out and dropped $600 on the set. Not worth $600...probably more of a $350 set of tires.  Read more
05-12-11 BFGoodrich Radial T/A Spec Tire Review
This is a phenomenal tire. Came with the wheels (that I bought from another Camaro owner), but when I see the price online, I can't believe they can make a tire this good for such a great price. I did better in the snow with this tire and my Camaro than I did last winter with my awd CTS4. Dry performance vs the Pzero that came on my car is good enough unless you are on a track. And these are far quieter and smoother. And, they still look almost new. Probably the best tire I have owned.  Read more
05-09-11 BFGoodrich Radial T/A Tire Review
I experienced loss of control on an ice covered road, now granted I drive a light truck, and this may be an unfair review, but I was traveling on a flat stretch of roadway going 35 to 40 max and lost total control and slid into a fenceline. This was disconcerting, but to a degree, to be expected of a light duty truck empty.  Read more
05-05-11 BFGoodrich Traction T/A T Tire Review
Snow traction was disappointing. With an aggressive tread, expected much better performance than what was actually was delivered. These tires were not quite what they were cracked up to be. They were supposed to be a four season tire that blended performance with all season traction, last snow storm, lost control at 15mph and ended in a ditch. Tires ride hard and make lots of noise. Getting less mpg, an average of 5 mpg than before. Never again I will buy BFG tires!!!.  Read more
05-02-11 Bridgestone Potenza RE970AS Pole Position Introductory Track Drive
Over the years Bridgestone has reserved the Pole Position designation for select performance tires using advanced designs. They have always featured innovative tread patterns and internal construction, but what has set them apart has been their revolutionary tread compounds. The addition of silica to a tire's tread compound has been known to improve traction and wear, but brings with it some complexity in properly mixing the rubber compound. Simply adding more of this "good thing" can make matters worse as silica doesn't bond easily to the polymers and other components in the compound mix. Bridgestone's new Potenza S-04 Pole Position is the latest Max Performance Summer tire to bear the Pole Position designation, and features Bridgestone's NanoPro-Tech tread compound chemistry. This improves the dispersion of silica throughout the tread rubber at the molecular level, allowing the engineers to use a high percentage in the S-04's tread compound.   Read more

04-25-11 Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Position RFT - Bridgestone Potenza Launch Event
Bridgestone is a long-time supplier of run-flat tires as Original Equipment on a variety of vehicles, affording plenty of opportunity to tune and develop the performance characteristics of their run-flat tire designs. Traditional self-supporting run-flat tires feature a very thick sidewall design, necessary to support the weight of the vehicle in the event of air loss. Even when properly inflated, this thicker sidewall reduces the tire's ride quality versus a conventional non-run-flat tire. Bridgestone's new third generation (3G) run-flat design used in the Potenza RE960AS Pole Position RFT features a thinner sidewall that minimizes the run-flat tire's negative impact on ride quality. While still thicker than a conventional tire, the signature features of the 3G run-flat sidewall are a unique exterior cooling fin design and special rubber compound, both designed to reduce the heat buildup that occurs while driving on the tire uninflated. Reduced heat buildup during run-flat operation allows for the thinner sidewall design, ultimately improving ride comfort versus previous generation run-flats.   Read more
04-21-11 BFGoodrich Traction T/A Spec Tire Review
These are the OEM tires for my 2010 Mustang. These tires are listed as being good for 50,000+ miles yet with only 19,000 miles on them, they need to be replaced even though I don't drive them hard at all. I drove these tires in both Vicenza, Italy and in Southern Louisiana so they went through both hot and cold climates. The dry grip was about what you expect for a lesser tire and the wet grip was horrendous. I spun tires in the rain even when taking off from second gear.   Read more
04-18-11 BFGoodrich Premier Touring Tires Review
We got these tires for an all-wheel drive 98 Town & Country & they seemed great! When we got a used 2005 T&C (front wheel drive), we swapped these tires onto it. Unfortunately, the lack of all wheel drive revealed the one weakness of this tire: poor wet traction - truly awful. My wife complains about wheel spin when it rains - the traction control constantly kicks in.   Read more

What's with all these reviews on here saying this tire's no good in the snow? We've had a challenging winter here in New England, and these BFGs have handled conditions very well. Quiet and comfortable on dry roads, well-composed when wet... A very positive experience overall.   Read more
04-11-11 BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDWS Tire Review
This tire looks great, grips well & gives the driver a lot of confidence. Lasted longer than expected. But, all of this comes at a VERY high price - this tire gets very noisy within 5000-7000 miles. About halfway into treadwear & later, the noise level is extreme. Roaring is so loud to almost be laughable. Friends have compared it to a jet engine & the space shuttle. I maintain the car well - car is aligned frequently & I've been consistently told the car has never been so far out of alignment to cause wear issues.   Read more
04-07-11 BFGoodrich g-Force Super Sport A/S Tire Review
Got these tires for my wife's 2000 Chevy Camaro; what a great choice! I've been a BF Goodrich buyer for years; cars and trucks, and these tires solidify how I feel about BFG; nothing else goes on my vehicles! The Camaro is a twin turbo-charged V6 that we've brought beyond SS standards; car is just nasty when you plant your right foot. These tires keep it "straight with all 4's down!" whether wet or dry. We don't drive the car in our famous upstate NY winters, but early-spring and late-fall coldness has no effect on these tires.   Read more
04-04-11 BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDW 2 Tire Review
I use my g35 for my weekend toy and like to drive it agressively. Treadwear is good especially for low profile tires. The main reason why I am writing this review is to make people aware about how noisy these tires are. Is have a lifted truck with Mud Terrain tires and they are just as loud as my BFG KDW2. From 5mph to 80mph these tires are annoyingly loud. I have an aftermarket exhaust and cant even hear it because these tires drone it out. If you are somebody that doesnt mind noise they are OK tires but the noise will drive you nuts.   Read more
03-31-11 BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDW Tire Review
"Spirited" is misleading. I drive it like I stole it....Admittedly, a Jetta is not the sportiest car out there. These tires (coilovers, camber plates and poly bushings, too) were an attempt to wake up its performance a bit. I had the opportunity to drive home in the rain immediately after they were installed. Wow! The car felt glued to the road, as if the pavement was dry! I have never had tires that performed so well in the wet, even very high-dollar models. I can't wait to try these on a wrm, dry day. Oh, yeah -- I'm curious about other reviewers' comments about noise. At 70mph, the car was no louder than with the el-cheapo, all-season tires that the car was sold with....I tried them on dry pavement: Excellent. They are not an R-compound tire by any means, but car control is incredible.   Read more

I bought a pair to replace the Kumho's that came on the car when I bought it used. Liked them at the time, and bought another pair soon after for the front. Great dry and wet traction, awful snow/ice of course...but I have another vehicle for that. After 10k miles I started hearing a loud WAWAWA sound from the back and had them rotated.   Read more

For track events on dry pavement this is THE tire to have. Sticks nearly as well as a full race compound tire, but lasts much, much longer. Tread blocks are a bit too thick and are prone to overheating in the summer when driven to the limit. Other than that, this is the only tire Ill run until I can afford full race slicks every event.   Read more
03-17-11 Michelin Pilot Super Sport
The Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 quickly became a benchmark in the Max Performance Summer tire category when it debuted back in 2004. 03-14-11 Eco-Focused Crossover SUV All-Season Tires
Tires designed to be eco-friendly were initially offered to drivers of small hybrid or ultra-efficient cars. As the world's focus on being ecologically responsible continued to expand beyond the hybrid community, more "green" tire offerings slowly began to include many everyday passenger cars. This trend has continued into the crossover/SUV market, as vehicle and tire manufacturers recognize the tire's role in helping reduce fuel consumption even on these larger, less efficient vehicles.   Read more

02-24-11 Eco-Friendly All-Season Tires
As the world continues to focus on being more ecologically friendly, tire manufacturers have begun to expand their role to help lower the tire's impact on the environment. In addition to developing technologies that help reduce the tire's contribution to fuel consumption through lower rolling resistance, new manufacturing methods use more eco-friendly raw materials such as non-aromatic oils in place of petroleum, while other tires are designed to simply last longer as a way to reduce the total number of tires used.   Read more
02-21-11 Grand Touring All-Season Tires
Grand Touring All-Season tires are designed to blend the smooth, quiet ride of a Passenger All-Season tire with the handling of a Performance All-Season tire, all while providing some year-round traction in moderate winter conditions. 02-14-11 Studless Ice & Snow Tires
Everyone who drives in the snow knows that winter road conditions are almost always changing. Every vehicle that passes through new-fallen snow either clears a path by blowing it away, churns it into slush or packs it down into ice depending on the weather conditions. What that means is you never know what you're going to find on the road up ahead. And just as changing weather and road conditions challenge us as we drive, they also prove challenging to conduct meaningful tire comparisons out on the open road.   Read more
02-10-11 Standard Touring All-Season Tires
Standard Touring All-Season tires typically feature S- or T-speed ratings, and are designed to blend the good noise and ride comfort of a Passenger All-Season tire with some of the enhanced handling found in Grand Touring All-Season tires. 02-02-11 High Performance All-Season Tire
Not all performance cars or drivers need or want Z-speed rated Ultra High Performance All-Season tires. Ultra High Performance All-Season (UHP A/S) tires are tuned to deliver excellent handling with impressive dry and wet traction, but often bring along a modestly firmer ride and somewhat quicker tread wear as trade-offs for their nimble handling and high grip levels. And while a tire's speed rating isn't a true performance rating, overall tire performance levels tend to climb or fall with higher or lower speed ratings.   Read more

01-24-11 Testing Tires Designed to Match Today's Pickups and SUVs
Back in the '90s, North American roads saw a real surge in the number of pickup trucks and SUVs as both became primary transportation for many drivers. During that era, body-on-frame trucks and SUVs with solid rear axles and simple front suspensions were the standard design. These utilitarian chassis designs served basic transportation needs well enough, but lacked the sophistication to provide the driver with a rewarding experience. The tire played only a modest role in how these vehicles drove, able to overcome the vehicle's somewhat disconnected feeling only so much.   Read more

11-06-09 Winter Tire FAQs

The primary concern that our customers express is that they don't want to get "stuck" in the snow (or in the ditch) during the winter. While in cities like Atlantic City, Memphis and Seattle located at the extreme edges of the snow belt, relatively new All-Season tires will probably work just fine. But the odds change as you move further into the snow belt or the All-Season tires have a few years of wear on them. And who wants to gamble...especially when their collision deductible and future insurance premiums are on the table.   Read more

For a number of years a hockey rink has been used to provide the ultimate simulation of the icy road conditions that we'll face later in winter. We've also confirmed the importance of matched tires on all four corners. 11-04-09 Removing Studs from Winter Tires
Tire studs look like short, fat nails with a flat head on the bottom & a tungsten pin on the top. They are inserted flat-head-down into holes molded into the tread design when the tire was manufactured. The extended fingers of a pneumatic stud gun are inserted into the molded holes & exp& the tread rubber, insert the stud, & are then withdrawn. This allows the tread rubber to nearly return to its original position & press against the stud, holding it in place. Depending on tire size & tread design, there are typically 80 to 100 studs used in each tire.   Read more

11-03-09 Metal Studs for Winter Tires
Introduced in the United States in the 1960s, metal studs that could be inserted into tires were developed to enhance traction on the slipperiest road condition...ice. The studs were designed to use the vehicle's weight & centrifugal forces to provide more ice traction as they repeatedly chipped into the driving surface. However, when the road wasn't covered with snow or ice, tire studs noisily chipped into the road itself. So studded tires are good for ice traction, but not good for roads.   Read more

10-28-09 Raising the Bar - Testing New Ultra High Performance All-Season Tires
Most often, developing the next big thing is easy. Designers learn from past efforts & technology moves forward, helping new product designs to easily surpass the performance of their predecessor. For some, though, it might not be so easy. Consider the occasional vehicle redesign that loses some of the original car's excitement as the second generation model debuts. Or the new music group that breaks onto the scene with chart-topping hits, but struggles with their second release. The sophomore blues. So, too, for tire companies as they work to improve on their successful designs. Many are able to improve, but not all.   Read more

10-27-09 Max Performance Summer Tires Tuned for North American Drivers
In the past, tires have often been like other consumer products sold in a global market - one design must serve all markets & consumer preferences. But in this age of specialization tire manufacturers are beginning to design tires specifically for drivers in North America. Many manufacturers have realized that the typical driving cycle in the U.S. & Canada is similar, but indeed different, than in Europe or Asia. The condition of our roads, the mix of urban driving plus extended highway cruising & even consumer preference on what attributes are desirable vary from one continent to another. Cookie cutter tire designs can't truly optimize the fit of a tire's performance envelope the same way a regionally specialized design can.  Read more

10-24-09 Testing the Next Evolution in Ultra High Performance All-Season Tires
Because of their contribution to vehicle appearance & performance, the popularity of using low profile tires & large diameter wheels on sports cars, sporty coupes & luxury performance sedans as Original Equipment (O.E.) or Plus Sized replacements continues to grow. However since many of today's sportiest vehicles come from the factory with summer tires that concentrate on increasing dry & wet traction only, the drivers that will only face occasional light snow during the winter months are creating a parallel need for appropriate Ultra High Performance All-Season tires as well.  Read more
10-24-09 Even Grander Grand Touring Tires
North America's touring tire category was originally created to identify the tires that were developed to blend much of the bold appearance & some of the responsiveness of performance tires with the ride qualities & acoustic comfort normally associated with passenger tires. As the range of touring tire offerings grew, Tire Rack further segmented them into summer or all-season, as well as St&ard Touring (typically lower speed rated, extra long mileage tires) or Grand Touring (higher speed rated, long mileage tires often used as Original Equipment).  Read more
10-24-09 Best to Match Tires in the Worst Conditions
Since we have experienced that the performance of different tire models typically varies in the amount of responsiveness & traction they deliver, we understand why almost every passenger car & light truck is designed to be equipped with the same tire model in all wheel positions. For that matter, the most typical tire combinations occur when different sizes of the same tire model are selected by the vehicle development engineers to accommodate a car's front-to-rear weight differences or other h&ling requirements. We also appreciate that continuing to use the same tire model in all wheel positions when tires are replaced will help maintain the vehicle's engineered h&ling balance.  Read more

10-23-09 Dunlop Launches a New Star in Extreme Performance Summer Tires
In the fall of 2007, Dunlop brought the successful Direzza Sport Z1 to North America. Already successful in Asia for drifting & time attack track events, the "Zed One" quickly found many fans among enthusiasts in North America driving potent performance vehicles on the street or in track & autocross events thanks to its blend of excellent dry traction, respectable wet grip & reasonable road manners. Not resting on its own success, Dunlop has taken the Direzza Sport Z1 another step forward with the new Star Spec version. Designated with a simple 5-pointed star on the sidewall (not to be confused with the symbol used to designate BMW Original Equipment status), the Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec features a revised tread compound on top of the original tire's architecture aimed at improving initial dry grip during the first lap of track driving or in autocross competition runs when tread compound temperatures are at less than maximum levels. Dunlop's own testing has also shown that wet traction is improved due to the lower operating temperatures found in these conditions (versus in the dry) puts the tire in the sweet spot for enhanced traction provided by the new tread compound.  Read more
10-23-09 Confirming Wintertime Performance Lives Up to an All-Season Promise
In 1977, Goodyear introduced America's first all-season radial, the Tiempo, capable of delivering better snow traction in wintry driving conditions than the straight rib-style tread designs of the day. In doing so, Goodyear began a consumer evolution in the U.S.'s snowbelt states towards the use of year-round tires. However as an emerging, evolving tire category, all-season tires were often classified as such by simply meeting limited geometric tread design requirements.  Read more
10-23-09 The Difference Between Wintertime Gripping and White Knuckle Snow Slipping
Today's new cars, vans & light trucks are originally fitted with either summer or all-season tires as they leave the factory. Summer tires are designed to enhance traction in dry & wet warm conditions, but were never intended to encounter winter's cold, slush, snow or ice. & while all-season tires are intended to provide traction in a wide variety of weather conditions, we've found they can behave like a Jack-of-all-trades, master of none.  Read more

10-22-09 Michelin X-Ice Xi2 Introductory Drive
Today's winter / snow tires have come a long way from the "snow tires" our gr&parents & parents used to use on the back of the family car or station wagon. Those old winter tire designs relied on deep, aggressive tread patterns that weren't all that far removed from off-road implement tires of the day to cope with the slush & snow of winter. But excessive road noise, limited snow traction & relatively poor ice grip were byproducts in order to get somewhat better winter traction than their summer or all-season tires could provide. Thankfully, technology marches on, as evident in today's Studless Ice & Snow winter / snow tires.  Read more
10-22-09 Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus vs other Tires
By now, most driving enthusiasts know that tires are more than just round & black. They are not simply injection molded rubber donuts like the old, novelty tire ashtrays. Tire engineers use a mix of traditional & exotic materials along with sophisticated manufacturing techniques that allow them great flexibility in how to meet their design challenge as they develop new products.  Read more

10-20-09 Winter-Snow vs All-Season vs Summer Tires
Snow & ice are the most challenging conditions drivers typically face; & the tires they use can make a big difference. New cars, vans & light trucks are usually fitted with either summer or all-season tires as Original Equipment (O.E.). Summer tires are designed to provide traction in dry, wet & warm conditions, but were never intended to encounter winter's cold, slush, snow & ice. All-season tires are designed to provide traction in a wider range of temperatures, but we've found they can perform like a Jack-of-all-trades, master of none. Only today's dedicated winter / snow tires have proven to be able to blend good noise comfort & winter traction. Read more

10-18-09 Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Ride & Drive Review
The Extreme Performance Summer tire category has grown out of the Max Performance Summer group, featuring tires that trade off some ride comfort, wet capability & treadwear to provide extreme levels of dry h&ling & responsiveness. Today's Extreme Performance category can trace its roots back to the first tire to make the promise of exceptional dry performance, the BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KD (Key feature: Dry grip). Released back in 1999, the g-Force T/A KD still delivers excellent dry performance, but by today's st&ards lacks the refinement of some of the more recent offerings in the category. While many of these new tires were developed for drifting & time attack competitors searching for extreme dry grip & control, most also show surprising levels of road manners & wet performance, too. Recently, Dunlop brought their successful Direzza Sport Z1 ("zed one") Extreme Performance tire to North America. Already a successful drifting tire in Asia, the Direzza Sport Z1 has thrown its hat in the ring of challengers seeking to become the North American Extreme Performance Summer champ. Read more

10-15-09 BFGoodrich Brings More Handling to Ultra High Performance All-Season Tires
Many of today's performance vehicles come from the factory with performance summer tires fitted as Original Equipment, which provide exceptional dry & wet traction in southern climates, or during spring, summer & fall in northern regions. But when temperatures & conditions up north head south, the tread compounds & patterns of summer-only tires are just not able to provide sufficient traction when ambient temperatures are near or below freezing or when there is snow on the roads. In Europe & Asia where many of these vehicles are manufactured, the tire decision is easy. Drivers in these regions embrace dedicated winter / snow tires to provide traction in snow & slush or on ice. Here in North America, dedicated winter / snow tires are less popular than in other parts of the world with many U.S. drivers opting for All-Season tires capable of h&ling light snow & slush in addition to the dry & wet conditions of summer. As the number of performance coupes & sedans on the road continues to grow, so does the need for tires capable of meeting the vehicle's true performance capabilities as well as their enthusiast drivers expectations, all while providing at least some level of wintertime traction in light snow. 10-12-09 Evaluating The New Direction of Ultra High Performance Summer Tires
It seems that nearly all of today's Ultra High Performance Summer tires are going in a new direction. Many of the popular tires in the category have long featured stylish & functional directional tread patterns designed to look as good as they perform in the wet, by aiding hydroplaning resistance & enhancing wet traction. Sporty h&ling & good dry grip were also st&ard characteristics. But often, all but the most expensive tires in this category tended to be a little unrefined when it came to ride comfort & road noise. 10-10-09 Max Performance Summer Tires Tuned for North American Drivers
In the past, tires have often been like other consumer products sold in a global market - one design must serve all markets and consumer preferences. But in this age of specialization tire manufacturers are beginning to design tires specifically for drivers in North America. Many manufacturers have realized that the typical driving cycle in the U.S. and Canada is similar, but indeed different, than in Europe or Asia. The condition of our roads, the mix of urban driving plus extended highway cruising and even consumer preference on what attributes are desirable vary from one continent to another. Cookie cutter tire designs can't truly optimize the fit of a tire's performance envelope the same way a regionally specialized design can. Read more

10-09-09 Latest development of Avon Tyres dominate classic racing!
Avon Tyres are once more the only choice for classic racing, following some very impressive results.
At the recent Goodwood Revival the top ten finishers were all shod with Avon rubber, while the top five were utilising a new race version of the 100/90-19 Roadrider on the rear, with an AM20 front.
Top slot once more went to a Fred Walmsley machine, ridden by 1987 500cc GP champion Wayne Gardner. Fred remarked: “I know this is classic racing, but I’ve been using Avons & helping to develop them for the last 30 years. In all that time, I have to admit this recent development is truly impressive. In the past we’ve never had all the range of fitments we’ve required, but now we can get Avon’s latest in 18- & 19-inch sizes which are perfect for us – & they suit the bikes a treat! On classic machinery, no-one makes the original tyres anymore, so you’ve always got a trade-off when selecting rubber, but over the last 12 months Avon’s products have really come on
