SCCA RUNOFFS 2009
September 27, 2009 Elkhart Lake, WI – On
what had turned out to be a beautiful autumn weekend, for the most part a bit of
rain to end the weekends events, the 45th SCCA Runoffs were held on
the spectacular 4.0 mile rolling, twisting, turning Road American road course.
Hoosier Racing Tire was there to support & service over half of the more than
600 entrants that competed for 25 National Titles.
The SCCA National Championship Runoffs is
one of the top 10 events in motorsports. SCCA Club Racing drivers do not simply
enter the Runoffs, they are invited. To earn an invitation to the Runoffs, a
driver must be amongst the top 10 in their class in one of the nine SCCA
Divisions, or be that class’ defending National Champion.
The Runoffs began with three days of
qualifying from September 22-24th. Racing began Friday, September 25th
& continued through September 27th. There were 25 race groups 24
races in all, varying from high tech open-wheel cars, to high-power American
muscle cars & even stock sedans straight off the showroom floor. Each race is
13 laps (52.624 miles) in length.

Race 1,
FA (Formula Atlantic)- Hoosier swept the podium with car No. 88 Mirl Swan in
first, the win capped a tremendous season for Swan, who captured the SCCA Super
Sweep award. The award has four components: a driver must win one of nine key
National races, a Divisional Championship, a National Championship & the newly
created nationwide point st&ings – all in one single class. Car No. 28 Jason
Byers came in a close second & car No. 75 Sedat Yelkin in third place.
Race 2,
FP (F Production)- Hoosier Racing Tire captured third with Eric Prill.
Race 3,
SSC (Showroom Stock C)- Just eight weeks removed from quintuple bypass surgery,
car No. 36, Joseph Mclughan came in 2nd & Car No. 14, Ali Naimi took
the third step receiving a hard fought 3rd place finish.
Race 4,
AS (American Sedan)- Another podium sweep car Car No. 74, Tom Sloe was on the
top step of the victory circle st&. Car No. 8, Brian Wallace stood by his side
holding down the 2nd place position. Philip Smith in the No. 54 car
took the third place honors.
Race 5,
Race 6,
T2 (Touring 2)- Attaining another Hoosier podium sweep, car No. 35, Don Knowles
was 1st, capturing his fifth-career SCCA National Championship. Car
No. 2, Jason Ott was 2nd & car No. 86, &y Wolverton was 3rd.
CSR (C Sports Racing)- Sweeping the podium again, car No. 82, rookie Matt Miller
stood proud atop the podium bringing home a first place finish, capturing the C
Sports Racing title by just 0.128 seconds over, car No. 07, Jacek Mucha in
second. Car No. 46, James French finished in third place.
Race 8 ,
GTL (GT Lite)- Hoosier Racing Tire had the No. 27 of Rob Macfarlane battling
hard for a fifth place finish.
In a day filled with lots of racing
excitement, eight races & eight different classes Hoosier earned four podium
sweeps & five first place wins.
Saturday, September 26, 2009 the second day
of racing.
T3 (T3)- Car No. 12 Bret Spaude came in 2nd & car No. 68 Aaron Stehly
was 3rd.
SSB (Showroom Stock B)- Hoosier has a top
spot with car No. 86, Toby Grahovec & a third with car No. 25, Michael
Scornavacchi.
Race 2,
FM (Formula Mazda)- In a field of seventeen up for the challenge racecars. Car
No.25, of James Harelson fought his way to a fifth place finish.
Race 3,
SM (Spec Miata)- Is a non-Hoosier spec tire race.
Race 4,
SRF (Spec Racer Ford)- Is a non-Hoosier spec tire race.
Race 5,
FV (Formula Vee)- After finishing second the last three years Michael Varacins,
in car No. 65 comes in first. Hoosier also takes third with car No. 48 driven
by Brian Jennerjahn.
T1 (Touring 1)- Hoosier is proud to take yet another podium sweep with
winner,car No. 55, Scott Tucker, second going to car No. 37, Lance Knupp & in
third car No. 52 driven by John Buttermore.
Race 7,
FC (Formula Continental)- Hoosier st&s atop the podium in first place with car
No. 81, Nicholas Coello & the second step with car No. 88 driven by Justin
Pritchard. After a race shortened on 40 minute time limited due to a collision
on the track.
Race 8, the final race of the day
GT3 (GT3)- An eight-place finish for car No. 0, Jeffrey Dernehl was the top spot
for Hoosier in this terrific battle of the GT3s.
In a second day racing excitement, eight
races & nine different classes Hoosier had one podium sweep & four first place
wins.
Sunday, September 27, 2009, once again found
racing underway.
FE (Formula Enterprise)- Hoosier sweeps the podium with car No. 91, Nick Evans.
Second spot goes to car No. 17, Scott Rettich & third to car No. 83 driven by
Br&on Aleckson.
Race 2,
GT2 (GT2)- Car No. 46, James Goughary hangs in for a great third place finish.
F5 (Formula 500)- Hoosier’s second podium sweep of the day & car No. 92, Jason
Knuteson second-consecutive Formula 500 title. Car No. 00, driven by Patrick
Gallagher in second & car No. 43, of Aaron Ellis in third place.
Race 4,
HP (H Production)- Car No. 4, Ron Bartell took the second place finish.
Race 5,
FF (Formula Ford)- After the lead duo, Tim Kautz & Tony Coello(both on
Hoosiers), crashed in the final turn overtaking a lapped car, Hoosier’s car No.
31, Scott Rubenzer took 1st, & car No. 72, Thomas Schwietz Jr took 3rd.
Race 6,
GT1 (GT1)- Managing to bring in an eighth-place
finish was car No. 83, of Max Lagod in this very difficult class of experienced
drivers.
Race 7,
DSR (D Sports Racer)- In an 18 car field & the skies starting to darken, teams &
drivers had to make decisions to stay on the slicks or change to wets, Garry
Crook in car No. 41 makes all the right moves & takes the win.
Race 8,
EP (E Production)- As the cars sat on the grid the skies darkened, but the rain
did not begin to fall steadily until the cars were on the pace lap, forcing
drivers to predict what tires they would need at the green flag.
In his good Hoosier Tire choice John Schmitt in car No. 62 brings home a fourth
place finish.
In Sunday’s eight
races, Hoosier had 2 podium sweeps. Four 1st places.
